This is a true story that I volunteered for this site. The purpose behind it is to point out why it is so important to use steel when building garages, carports, sheds etc. At least it is important to those of us who live in Florida.
I moved here 12 years ago. My wife and I purchased a home in a nice suburban neighborhood and settled into a wonderful life.
At least until a couple of years later….
That is when we suffered through 3 hurricanes in a matter of a month. Bad hurricanes. The first one came through and took our pool screen. We were without power for 8 days and spend that time in a local shelter which as you can imagine was not a pleasant experience.
The second one came through two weeks later and destroyed our wooden fence. Luckily the power outage lasted only a couple of days this time.
The final hurricane came a week later and just about convinced me to vacate The Sunshine State forever. The damage in my neighborhood was extensive with fallen trees splintering roofs and landing on cars.
But let me digress to the point of this article.
My nest door neighbor had a steel carport that I had never paid much attention to. I didn’t even know it was steel. Yet, during the hurricane, a giant oak tree fell directly on it. And it didn’t buckle! In fact, it barely looked damaged. Of course the new car under it was untouched.
I was amazed that the structure had held up to a massive tree and asked my neighbor about it. He informed me it was steel and was guaranteed for incredible winds. Winds maybe, but a tree?
Needless to say after that fall, I made a few changes. I invested in a generator, stocked up on emergency supplies and bought a steel carport for my new car.
Here it is 10 years later and it looks as if it was installed yesterday. No upkeep, no problems, no rotting. Just an unbelievably smart investment on my part if I do say so myself.
I truly do love steel carports and highly advise you to investigate them if you live in Florida!
